Simply gorgeous passages…the light, shadow and contrast… anything that is Italy wins my heart. 💜 I miss it there. Enjoyed this, Crina!

Italy is medicine for all human wrongdoings. I miss it too. Thanks for stopping by, Juliette!

Wonderful post, Crina! I love the central theme of corridors and passages, that lends itself so well to thinking about the path of life and all of its travels, both spiritual and physical. Your photos show this 'deeper' quality well, by capturing these extraordinary spaces following your photographic intuition, your grasp of light and what it does to these streets and corridors. I like your stories that accompany them. I don't really have a favorite among these images, but maybe I like the intimacy of the photo with the old tiles, the night mood in the Lisbon street and the near-sacred play of light in the Sallèles‑d’Aude image just a little more. I wasn't familiar with the writing of Julian Barnes, but it seems interesting to delve into. And of course, the Jonathan Franzen quote about birds is a statement after my own heart; I have the deepest respect for what I see as their genius superiority.

thank you, Vincent! I am trying to photograph empty places wherever I go - I don't like people, so there you go. As for Julian Barnes, he is a fantastic observer of time and its way of shaping memory and emotions. He is perhaps the greatest Flaubertist out there, and I can't recommend his writings enough. Obviously, this is a matter of taste, but you can't go wrong with any of his books.

How nice to end the space travel with a song by Maria Bethania, an obsession of my younger years. I hope to see you - most likely in Naples - at the end of this year.

I/we miss you guys so much. Just give us some headstart to Naples, ok?

Really enjoyed these experiences of spaces, the corridors of light and your tiles/pixels, birds/humans analogies. Also, Barnes' reference to Montaigne's idea about death, that "we should think about death on a daily basis. We should make it our familiar. That's the best way of treating it. Not as some awful sort of ghastly skeleton with a scythe in its hand coming to chop us off. He says we should ... almost domesticate it, tame it in this way" is how I feel about photography and it's why I love Tim Carpenter's book 'To Photograph Is To Learn How To Die'.

I got tired from refreshing the tracking info for the book. Julian Barnes is most likely the only author I've been stalking and reading from my first encounter with his work (Flaubert's Parrot). I am addicted to his writing and thinking. And yes, regarding the photos - they do have a bit of Experiența Spațiului going on, but these are more like fleeting glimpses, collected randomly in a week with great personal stress. Thank you for your comment, and for picking out this particular quote.

I’ve only read a few Barnes novels but my favourite is ‘A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters’, especially for the description of Gericault’s ‘Raft’ which was something of an obsession in my younger years. Perhaps we could each select a favourite painting for a future exchange of Experiența Spațiului letters?

Crina Prida's avatar

that is a great idea, really! And for some reason, that chapter from 10 1/2 is my favorite too.

Great. I remember seeing a wonderful TV programme by Andrew Graham-Dixon about Gericault’s ‘Raft’ some time in the 90s (I think). I’ve never been able to track it down. Would love to see it again. He mentions it in this talk.

Genoa is indeed a magic place! Definitely worth a lot of time to explore and just relax... and eat. I had the best pesto of my life in Genoa. Good job on buying and keeping the tiles, it is a connection to the past, as I guess real mail will be soon. Great post, great pics! Thank you, Crina!

I had the best focaccia and the best ice cream, in an obscure gelateria, where an American friend whom we've met on purpose in this city invited us. What a splendid place indeed. Thank you, Soren!
