WOW, WOW, WOW!! First of all, happy new year Crina! Secondly, I LOVE all of these images. So rich and full of layered stories!! I mostly focused on the images and will come back to read the text more carefully, but you captured beautiful aspects of Cyprus. My DNA tells me my relatives are Cypriots and Southern Italians, though I know my father was Lebanese, as was his grandparents. I am itching to go there... more comments after I read the text more carefully. The images were just so exciting I had to peruse them first!.

Thank you, Juliette! Also for letting me know about your heritage. And thanks for joining me in a voyage along the Mediterranean.

of, ce poftă de joie de vivre mi-ai făcut, de dor de ducă

este o destinație căreia i se potrivește mai mult decât altora expresia dolce far niente. Ideală pentru final de an. Nu știu dacă aș merge acolo vara.

I enjoyed this post! It's the first longer series of images of yours I've seen so far, and I'm impressed by the way you have made something special out of a trip in a place that, if I've read your accompanying story well, is full of apathy, rich people being bored, a place that could easily inspire the worst side of anyone, and a BnB owner that seems to fit the place so well. The photos radiate that emptiness; you've found perfect examples to share your experience in a way that makes us feel it. It's like an unspoken weariness of life that's all over the faces I see. Like the one of the bearded man with the Nike sweater talking on the phone, while the woman he's with seems to be lost in thought, uninterested. Even the cats look like they don't really care, but then again, that's what cats like us to think. I liked the photos of the reflections and the sea.

But you've thrown in some photos of beautiful stillness that are also part of the experience, and speak of the past, the left behind and the derelict. The photo of the dilapidated house with closed shutters and the shadow of a street lantern, the broken down room against the light in Nicosia, the chair with the stack of paper and cartons, those are the ones I really like. And you couldn't leave a Seinfeld reference out, of course.

Perhaps I can't thank you enough for the comment. I'm aware that in a few years time, every serious photographer will probably be dead. I need the delicate touch of a bird's wings.

Thank you for this kind comment, Crina! I don’t know if I completely share your dark vision on the future of serious photography, but I’m happy you like my comment. I will gladly keep commenting (and remind myself to limit the interpretations).

Always!

Great post, Crina. I do find some of these golden visa rules in certain countries very, very inappropriate. Particularly given the state of the world. Anyway, it sounds like you got a bit of warmer weather, but I don't get the impression you will be going back. Just remember, a change is as good as a rest..... or so they say! 😀 I look forward to more of your musings in 2026. My favourite photo: The chair and cardboard.... good eye!

Thank you, Soren; I am hopelessly in love with life along the Mediterranean Sea. Greece is my first love, but wherever I go, I find this amazing balance of sea and terra firma, which translates in strong personalities of the people who inhabit these places.

What a lovely surprise. I’m a little jealous of your sunny excursion in the dead of winter. I enjoyed the different atmospheres either side of the ‘border’. There are some wonderful images. The chair and stack of papers really appealed to me. You conjure an unusual atmosphere that, for some strange reason, reminded me of Visconti’s ‘Death in Venice’?! No bitching before 6am. 🤣

now that you mention, yes - the place has the decadent feel from Visconti's film. I loved making photos of a place that has nothing to show me, so I had to actively look for things to hang my gaze upon. No bitching of course!

It’s a lovely, atmospheric sequence. I could almost smell the coffee and cigarettes.
